Preparing your quilt top

Preparing your quilt top for long arm quilting is an important part of the finishing of your heirloom project.

Here are a few tips to start you on your journey.

  • Clip all stray threads on BOTH sides of the top.  They are much harder to remove once the quilting is done so NOW is the time.
  • The top should also be free of loose threads stuck to the top or back of the quilt aka LINT.  A lint roller is a quilter's friend!
    • The back needs to be 8 inches longer and wider than your quilt.  So if your quilt is 56" x 70" your back needs to be 64" x 78".  Be sure it is ironed without any folds or creases in it.
    • Press your top and your back. There should be no wrinkles or folds.
    • Hang it over a hangar or even better one of those large 3-5 gallon large plastic ziplock bags.  The bag will keep all your quilt pieces together and make it easy to see what's in it.
